Eccentric Bollywood filmmaker, Karan Johar, has made quite a name for himself for many reasons. The producer/director makes movies that appeal to the masses, albeit heavily impressed by the rom-com genre in Hollywood. Moreover, he also has a knack for spilling the juiciest gossip through his notorious talk show, Koffee With Karan. We aren’t shy to admit it’s a total guilty pleasure!
However, hot news on the block is that Johar is stepping back into the world of filmmaking with an epic period piece, titled Takht. The film will feature some of Bollywood’s biggest hotshots like Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, and Kareena Kapoor, who will be joined by Vicky Kaushal, Jhanvi Kapoor, and many others somewhere along the road.
The director recently made an appearance on Neha Dhupia’s talk show, No Filter Neha, and talked about his upcoming venture in the film world, amongst many other things. He also went as far as to call it his most ambitious film to date. Sounds heavy.
“Takht is the most passionate piece of material that I think I will ever direct. I’m hugely passionate about it.”
Wow, he sure knows how to build up the anticipation. He also added how it will be inspired by the Mughal era. Knowing Ranveer Singh and his acting chops in Bhansali films, he will surely pull off whatever role he is offered.
“I’m obsessed about the Mughal era ever since I can remember. That’s the one part of history that I was obsessed about in terms of its visual texture, its controversial content, the political betrayal, the love, the lust, the decadence, the debauchery, the madness, the violence, everything. That era is exotic and it’s gorgeous. It’s absolutely beautiful.”
If Johar manages to pull all the strings right, it will certainly be a masterpiece in the making. He also revealed some discrete bits about the plot, saying it is the story of two brothers, Dara Shikoh and Aurangzeb. These characters will be played by Singh and Kaushal, respectively.
“It’s something that I’ve always chased and wanted to kind of put up there and finally when Sumit Roy, the writer, came to me with the story of Dara and Aurangzeb, which is pretty much the first time I’m saying that what Takht is about. I think it is that part of history that I’m so passionate about. I can’t wait to get into the prep mode which I’ve already started off.”
It is also rumored that Anil Kapoor will be playing the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the film, with Kareena Kapoor as his daughter, Jahanara. Wow.
The release date of the movie isn’t expected anytime soon, as the director will be busy with the release of Student of the Year 2 next year. But nevertheless, we will keep our eyes peeled for any more details!
